He felt them on his head, the feathers of his ancestors. They were a paradox of sensations, both cold and warm, stiff and soft, dead and alive. They glowed with a dual blue and orange light, pulsing with the rhythm of his heartbeat. He could hear their whispers in his mind, a cacophony of voices that both praised him and cursed him for the darkness that lurked within the black forest.
He was the chieftain of his tribe, the last of his bloodline. He had inherited the headdress from his father, who had died in a blaze of glory defending their village from a horde of twisted creatures that had emerged from the forest. He had sworn to uphold his legacy and keep his people safe.
He walked through the village, feeling a mix of emotions from his fellow tribesmen and women. They looked at him with awe and envy, respect and fear, loyalty and betrayal, trusting him to lead them through these troubled times. He felt their admiration and contempt, but also their expectation and pressure.
The forest was growing darker every day, spreading its chaos and order across the land. No one knew what caused it or how to stop it. Some said it was a curse from a vengeful god, others said it was a blessing from a merciful god. All they knew was that they had to face it as much as possible.
But he knew that he could not avoid it forever. He had seen visions in his dreams, visions of fire and blood, of screams and death. He had seen his village burning, his people slaughtered, his headdress snatched from his head by a dark figure with glowing red eyes.
He knew that he had to face it sooner or later. He knew that he had to enter the forest and confront whatever evil dwelled there. He knew that he had to sacrifice himself for the sake of his people.
He did not fear death. He feared only himself.
